Electric Actuator Ball Valve

What is an Electric Ball Valve?

An electric ball valve is a quarter-turn valve that uses motors and gear trains to control flow. It's also known as a motorized ball valve or rotary ball valve.

How Does an Electric Ball Valves Work?

Electric actuated valves use electric actuators to drive them open and closed. Electric valve actuators typically convert high speed low torque output motors into low speed high rotary torque output that drives the valve via a gearbox. Electric ball valves use part-turn rotary electric actuators because the working angle of a ball valve is typically 90 degrees, and are very popular as electric actuated ball valves can offer a cost effective solution for valve automation.

Pneumatic Devices Have Three Obvious Advantages

What Materials are Motorized Ball Valves Made of?

Internal Thread Pneumatic Three Piece Type

Brass Ball Valves

Brass is the most commonly used metal for electric valves for home use and industrial settings. It is a durable and cost-effective metal that is suitable for a wide range of temperatures, pressures, and types of media flow.

Explosion-Proof Electric Ball Iron Flanged Butterfly Valve

304 Stainless Steel Ball Valves

304 stainless steel is slightly more expensive than brass, but more affordable than 316 stainless. The major benefit of stainless is that it is lead-free and safe to use in systems with drinking water.

Pneumatic Plastic Butterfly Valve

Plastic Ball Valves

Plastic motorized valve bodies are made up of UPVC material which is durable and cost-effective. This body type is also safe to use with potable drinking water. Additionally, plastic valves can be used in systems that have corrosive media such as salt water or acids.

What are the Advantages of the Electric Ball Valve?
Easy to Operate

You will control the electric ball valve very easily from the control panel of the application system. It does not require the services of compressed air to open and close the valves thus easing the operations.

Low Cost of Operation

Due to the automatic nature of the electric ball valve, you will not hire many operators to help with the operations. You will only incur a few bills such as the cost of electricity and that of maintaining the electric ball valve.

Minimal Noise

It is also a very quiet type of valve that produces minimal noise during the main operations. In other words, it makes the working environment peaceful and free of distractions from unusual noises.

Flexible Motion Control

In addition to the above, the motion control is not only automatic but also very flexible. You can change the mode of operation such as speed just by adjusting the motor and gears from the control panel.

Slower Cycle Time

In comparison to the pneumatic ball valve, the electric ball valves have slower cycle times. Implying that, they have higher levels of efficiency that improve the output in comparison to pneumatic ball valves.

How to Maintain Electric Ball Valve?

Electric ball valves should be stored in dry and ventilated rooms, and both ends of the passage should be blocked.

Electric ball valves stored for a long time should be inspected regularly to remove dirt and coated with rust-proof oil.

The electric actuated ball valve should be inspected regularly after installation. The main inspection items are as follows:

Benefits of Maintaining Your Electric Ball Valves

Longevity

Valves that last longer and require few to no repairs help save money, prevent downtime and keep plant production on schedule. Without routine maintenance and quality checks, any issues with your ball valves may be missed, leading to equipment failures, damaged parts or injured workers.

Security and Safety

The worst-case scenario on a plant floor is a preventable accident that causes injuries or costly repairs. Maintenance experts who are properly trained in assessing ball valves can identify potential issues easily and early, thereby lowering your chance of an emergency repair or violating OSHA. When it comes to plant safety, properly installed and maintained ball valves can prevent any hazardous leaks in a piping or processing system.

Reduced Need for Shutdowns

Downtime is expensive, since any time your plant is not producing is money wasted or revenue missed. Some ball valve maintenance can even be performed while the valve is in operation, allowing plant production to continue uninterrupted.

Cost Saving

Just as increased uptime means increased revenue, fewer maintenance issues keep more money in your pocket. If ball valves are regularly inspected, maintained and replaced on a projected schedule, there will be less need to allocate funds to unexpected repairs or replacements.

Applications of Electric Ball Valves

Stainless Steel Electric Actuator

On/Off Control

The motorized ball valves can be switched from open to fully closed without any stops at any position in between. Every time the actuated ball valve finishes the cycle of opening and closing, the electric motor will switch off through internal cams, which strikes the limit switches.
For instance, when the electric motor receives a signal of closing the motorized ball valve, the motor is energized, rotating in order to close the ball valves. Subsequently, the limit switches travel on the cam as the internal cam rotates on the shaft until the lobe makes the switch to stop the electric motor, breaking the circuit.

Positioning Control

Another type of application requires the electric ball valves to open or close partially, detecting and responding to the various conditions of water flows. In this case, the goal can be achieved through the incorporation of a digital position sensor.
Depending on the special flow requirements, the external control command signal will be created. This input signal will be compared by the actuator of the motorized ball valves consistently to the actual position through the output feedback element. Subsequently, the actuated ball valves will be driven to balance the commands and reach the required position. A signal of approximately 4mA or 0V is typically used to close the motorized ball valves.

Ultimate Guide for Electric Ball Valve

Q: What is a high pressure electric stainless steel ball valve?

A: A high pressure two-way electric stainless steel ball valve is constructed of two separate body pieces made of cast 316 stainless steel pieces which are threaded together and hydraulically locked. The wall thickness is usually much larger than a lower pressure ball valve as it can accommodate a much higher pressure range (ours will do up to 200 Bar). The seats are AUTORUN which is great for high pressures but has a narrower range of compatible media when compared with PTFE which is typically used at lower pressures. It has a direct mounted IP67 electric actuator fixed to the valve which conducts its 90 degree turn (open. Close). The actuator comes with extra limit switches for voltage free end of stroke open/close feedback and a visual indicator.

Q: What is the application of motorized ball valve?

A: A motorized ball valve is great for remotely controlling and/or for an automated application. They are commonly used as electric water ball valves or for heating units. An electrically actuated ball valve can be controlled to be open/closed (2-way), 3-point control, or modulated.

Q: What are the common application of ball valves?

A: Ball valves are commonly used as fluid shutoff valves in onshore and offshore oil and gas production facilities. They are also used in fuel gas system feeding furnaces. Ball valves are designed to control the flow of high-pressure gasses and liquids with minimal pressure drop.

Q: Where would you use a ball valve?

A: Ball valve is the most used fluid shutoff valve in upstream oil and gas production facilities, both onshore and offshore. They are also used in fuel gas systems feeding furnaces.

Q: How does electronic ball valve work?

A: The electric motor generates a torque, which is transmitted by a shaft connected to the valve stem. This rotates the ball valve. To achieve the required torque, a system of gears is connected to the electric motor shaft. The torque capacity is an important specification for selecting an actuator.

Q: What are the benefits of motorized valves?

A: The improvement in output control helps to reduce the costs related to product waste. Motorized valves do not rely on an operator, that allows them to carry on the monitor and adjust flow through a system without disturbance.

Q: What is the difference between a solenoid valve and an electric ball valve?

A: Typically, solenoid valves require power to open or close and more power to hold the valve in its energized state. Electric ball valves, though, only use power to open or close and don't require power to stay in that position. However, there are solenoid valve designs that do not require power to stay in that position.

Q: What are ball valves used for?

A: A ball valve is a shut-off valve that allows, obstructs, and controls the flow of liquids, gases, and vapors in a piping system by rotating the ball having a bore inside the valve. The ball is mounted against two seats and has a shaft that connects it to the operating and control mechanism that rotates the ball.

Q: What are motorized ball valves used for?

A: The main use of the electric ball valve is to control the flow of different types of gasses and liquids. It is part of a fluid transport system that will either allow flow or block the flow of fluids through the pipes.

Q: What is the function of the electric ball valve?

A: The main use of the electric ball valve is to control the flow of different types of gasses and liquids. It is part of a fluid transport system that will either allow flow or block the flow of fluids through the pipes.

Q: What does an electric valve do?

A: Electric valves are generally used for regulating, and also for switching, such as in the fan coil terminal. The general flow coefficient and the working pressure difference of the solenoid valve are small. The solenoid valve is driven by the electromagnetic coil, which is easily damaged by voltage impact.

Q: Are ball valves electrical?

A: An electric ball valve is one of the most common valves due to its simple operation, reliability, long service life, and wide range of applications. A motorized ball valve is great for remotely controlling and/or for an automated application. They are commonly used as electric water ball valves or for heating units.

Q: What is the most durable ball valve?

A: Stainless steel ball valves are the most durable option. These valves offer the most robust offering of compatible chemicals. The chemical makeup of stainless steel offers natural corrosion resistance. These valves are also towards the top for pressure and temperature ratings.

Q: What are the components of a ball valve?

A: Ball valves consist of the ball, shaft, and seat which are contained in the valve housing. The ball is placed between two seats and has a stem that connects it to the operating mechanism. Types of ball valves are classified according to their housing assembly, ball design, and bore profile.

Q: How does an actuated ball valve work?

A: Actuated ball valves are rotating ball type pipe valves that come without manual turn handles to allow installation with an actuator. The valves are used together with an actuator device to automate valve opening and closing and therefore control plumbing fluid rates.

Q: How does a 2-way ball valve work?

A: For a 2-way ball valve, the flow direction is from the input to the valves output. The flow can be closed by turning the valve handle perpendicular to the direction of flow. Therefore, turning the valve handle in line with the flow will open the valve.

Q: What are 2 way valves used to control?

A: A 2-way valve can be used to control heating and/or regulate the flow and temperature. 2-way valves feature two ports — an inlet and an outlet port. Used for on/off applications.

Q: What is an example of a 2-way valve?

A: A 2-way valve stops flow or allows flow. A water faucet is a good example of a 2-way valve. A water faucet allows flow or stops flow by manual control.

Q: What is the difference between a 2-piece ball valve and a 3-piece ball valve?

A: The big difference between the two is that the body on the 3-piece valve can be taken out without disturbing the two end caps. A two-piece ball valve doesn't often allow this to happen, and it's not possible at all with a one-piece ball valve.

Q: How do I choose a ball valve?

A: Choosing the appropriate ball valve for your specific needs requires consideration of several factors:
Valve Size and End Connections.
Material Selection.
Pressure and Temperature Ratings.
Flow Control Requirements.
Actuation Type.
